I wanted to share a few tips to being more "fashionable" and enjoying what you wear! I've been here for almost 10 years now and have loved seeing styles evolve - both my own and those of my favorite bloggers. With that thought in mind, here's a few things that have helped me as my style evolves...
1. Review Fashion Blogs and Advice
One way to be more fashionable and stylish is to educate yourself on the matter. You won’t know what changes to make unless you understand the trends and what’s in and what’s out. Take the time to review fashion blogs and advice that the experts are sharing online and offline. After years of following style blogs, I find my own style has evolved to match elements I like, and avoided the elements I don't like. Follow fashion icons on social media who are posting images and tips so you can keep up with the latest trends. And don't be afraid to not follow something you like...for example, I've never liked the super baggy trend on women before, so I've never really gone for it. Even when it's in style!
2. Pay Attention to the Details
It’s all about the details when it comes to being more fashionable and stylish. There are minor tweaks you can make that go a long way in helping you to stand out for all the right reasons. For example, accessories are one way to improve your looks and enhance just about any outfit. You can add a large and colorful handbag, a stunning piece of jewelry, or purchase eyeglasses in a well-known brand to help your cause. My two go-tos are earrings and glasses. I've invested in a lot of crazy earrings and sunglasses over the years, because I tend to wear lots of solid colors (like black and blue). Having a big statement earring with lots of color helps make an outfit interesting to me! Hop online and visit website that has some of the hottest and most fashionable eyewear around.
3. Go through Your Closet
It’ll also help if you set aside time to go through your closet and get rid of or donate what no longer fits you or is out of style. Otherwise, you risk falling into old habits and putting on what’s hanging in your closet regardless if it’s fashionable. This is something I REALLY need to do right now, especially given quarantine! I'm realizing how much of my closet is stuff I've hung onto because I "might wear it for this ONE special type of occasion"...and it's just taking up space and collecting dust. So, clean out outdated items so you can make room for trendier pieces that will help you to look amazing. Get organized so that you know what you have and can wear and what you need to buy yet. Invest in the staples such as a dark pair of jeans and a black dress so that you’re always ready to dress for any type of occasion.
4. Experiment and Try New Looks
It never hurts to experiment and try out new and different looks when you’re attempting to be more fashionable and stylish. You won’t know how the clothing will look on you or how you’ll feel in it until you try on the various options. Don’t be afraid to mix and match animal prints, patterns, and florals to make your outfit more unique. As you can see from the outfit I've featured here, there are multiple prints on this one dress alone! I'm really liking that hodge-podge type look right now. Another tip? Go shopping and try on an item you usually wouldn’t purchase to help you get more comfortable experimenting and stepping outside your comfort zone. You may come to find there are some pieces you fall in love with and make you look beautiful that you never imagined wearing.
5. Ask for Advice from Stylish Friends
Reach out and ask for advice whenever you want to make sure you're giving off the right vibes in a given outfit. You likely have a few friends who you look up to because they’re always wearing the right types of clothes and are up-to-date with the latest fashion advice. See if your friend will go shopping with you to help you out or would be willing to share clothes with you so you can test out different styles and see what you like. I love shopping with my best friend, Anna, more than anything else - because she'll be honest with me when something I like doesn't ACTUALLY look good on me!
6. Wear Clothes that Fit Your Shape and Body Type
Another way to be more fashionable and stylish is to wear clothes that fit your shape and body type. Clothing that looks good on runway models may not look the same on you - and that's just the reality! I see plenty that I like on the runway but that I know I'd never actually want to pull off (because, let's be real, I couldn't). It’s better to choose garments that are attractive on you and aren’t too tight or too baggy. Be discerning and select items that bring out your best assets and make you feel comfortable in your own skin. Clothes that flatter your shape will highlight your unique features - and you'll feel great in them, too!
